Training for your New Year Resolutions
Have you ever thought about New Year resolutions as goals that need training for?
They don’t just happen, you have to get fit for them……..mindfully fit.
Here’s the longer version.
In Yoga we train the body. You know that. It’s why most of us start yoga in the first place. We train the body to move easier, to be more flexible or at least keep the flexibility we already have. We train to improve balance, strength and stamina. We even train the physical body to relax. We really like that part.
In Yoga we train the breath. You know that too. By training the breath we breathe better, how we were designed to breathe. Better breathing leads to an improvement in energy and a sense of aliveness. We also know focused breathing brings our awareness back to the self, helping to calm us down, or provide a pathway to sleep.
In Yoga we also train the mind. We train the mind to clear the clutter, quieten monkey mind, reduce the self-doubt, anxiety, recurring negative thoughts, the awfulizing and the what if’s. If we can get through the blur of those there is a positive side. Once we have disciplined the mind it becomes steady, reliable and able to stay focused. Now you have a mind you can work with and retrain. You can apply new goals and challenges knowing they are more likely to be effective and stay with you. Those are the ones we often set at this time of year, the ones we call New Year resolutions.
Best wishes for your mind training and your resolutions.
May your body, breath and mind remain steady and reliable.
