The Order of the Pose

The Order of the Pose

Inspiration to expand the theme of this term came from a simple question.

“Does it matter what order the poses go”?

In reality a simple answer – no it doesn’t matter.

But wait there’s more………..

Perhaps to get the best from a yoga practice it may help to let the feeling body decide the order of the poses.

  • Warming the muscles and joints.
  • Slowly increasing the stretches and weight bearing.
  • Continue to deepen the practice by increasing the number of repetitions or lenghthening the ‘hold’ in any one pose.
  • Using the wisdom of the ‘feeling body’ to know which pose to move into next.
  • A twist towards the end of the practice.
  • Rest in a deeply releasing pose.
  • Sit for a few minutes, breathe and reflect.

This is a general guideline to any practice, and also applicable to a sequencial flow.

Take a base sequence, one you love; and let your ‘feeling body’ decide where it wants to go from each pose to the next.

Moving from your inner wisdom takes you away from mentally planning and remembering a sequence; and also helps distract monkey mind because you are feeling and being rather than thinking and doing.
